Omaha South High School had not hosted a varsity football game since 1946. Collin Field, known as “The Hole”, sat in a natural bowl at 23rd and “L” Streets and was used as South High’s track and practice football field Lamp Rynearson provided survey, engineering design, and construction administration services for a new multi-sport playing field and track stadium to replace the existing facility.
The project goal was to provide a full-sized soccer field meeting the requirements of the annual Nebraska State High School Soccer Tournament that could also be used as a varsity football field. To accomplish this, the existing track configuration and field event layouts was revised in order to optimize the available space and meet the client’s preferences. Lamp Rynearson provided preliminary and final design for the new synthetic surface track and infilled synthetic turf, along with relocating and designing of tennis courts. A parking lot, retaining walls, landscape and irrigation, new bleachers, and corresponding public improvements were also included in the scope of work. To this day, the completed facility continues to have meaningful social and economic impacts on the surrounding neighborhood.
