Action Through Design – Tenaska Center for Arts Engagement

Nestled in the heart of Omaha’s arts district, the Tenaska Center for Arts Engagement is the newest addition to the Omaha Performing Arts Campus—a vibrant hub that also includes the Holland Performing Arts Center and Steelhouse Omaha. Designed as a dedicated space for education, rehearsals, and community engagement, the Tenaska Center expands the reach of Omaha Performing Arts by providing a permanent home for programs that inspire learners of all ages. With its opening, the campus is now complete, offering a seamless connection between world-class performances and hands-on arts experiences, and creating a dynamic environment where creativity, learning, and community come together.

Step outside the Tenaska Center for Arts Engagement, and you’ll find more than just a beautiful building—you’ll discover a purposefully designed outdoor space that invites you to learn, gather, and connect with the arts in new ways. Along Douglas Street, Lamp Rynearson’s landscape architecture team has transformed what was once a simple sloped lawn into a dynamic, multi-use environment that’s as inspiring as the performances and classes happening inside.

This isn’t your typical green space. The design evolved hand-in-hand with the center’s programming, resulting in a tiered outdoor venue that’s ready for everything from impromptu rehearsals to community events. At its heart is an oval stage, framed by a mirrored architectural backdrop that reflects both the energy of the center and the city beyond. Whether you’re attending a workshop, enjoying a performance, or simply passing by, the space draws you in—welcoming you from Douglas Street with an ADA-accessible path that ensures everyone can participate.

Every detail of this outdoor venue was chosen with intention. Authentic limestone grounds the space in local character, while multi-seasonal plantings bring color and texture year-round. The planting design isn’t just about beauty—it’s about creating a living, breathing environment that supports learning and engagement in every season. Lighting is woven throughout, providing both ambiance and safety, so the space remains inviting long after the sun sets.

Functionality is at the core of the design. The lawn sits atop engineered soil with under drains, maximizing usable hours even after rain—because community shouldn’t have to wait for perfect weather. Stairs and pathways connect each tier, making it easy for students, artists, and visitors to move seamlessly between the street, the outdoor venue, and the Tenaska Center itself.

One of the most striking features? The outdoor space is visible from multiple sides and floors of the Tenaska Center, creating a sense of connection between what’s happening inside and out. Whether you’re looking down from a rehearsal room or walking along Douglas Street, you’re part of the experience.

At Lamp Rynearson, we believe that great design is about more than aesthetics—it’s about creating spaces that foster belonging, access, and authentic community engagement. The outdoor venue at the Tenaska Center for Arts Engagement is a testament to that philosophy. It’s a place where the arts spill out into the city, where learning happens in the open air, and where every visitor is invited to be part of Omaha’s creative story.

As the Tenaska Center opens its doors, we’re excited to see how this outdoor space will inspire new connections, new performances, and new memories for years to come. new memories for years to come.
