After 40+ years in engineering, Dan Miller, PE, is retiring as Design Group Leader. Stepping into the role is Chad Thompson, PE, ENV-SP, a leader with deep experience in Kansas City public works and infrastructure.
A Career Built on Community: Dan Miller’s Lasting Impact
Dan Miller’s career reflects a steadfast commitment to serving communities through engineering. A licensed Professional Engineer in Kansas and Missouri and Certified Public Manager Dan brought together technical expertise and a clear focus on long-term community impact.
Before joining Lamp Rynearson, Dan served as City Engineer for Overland Park, Kansas. In that role, he led Capital Improvements programming and project management for stormwater management transportation infrastructure, street and stormwater maintenance, buildings, and the standards that guide how the community grows. That municipal experience shaped his approach and strengthened the firm’s ability to deliver practical, effective solutions while working alongside local governments.
At Lamp Rynearson, Dan became a trusted partner to municipalities across the metro. His work spans drainage improvements, street reconstruction, sanitary sewer rehabilitation, streetscape design, and capital improvement planning. Just as important, he built relationships that continue to define how the firm works with communities across the region.
His leadership also extended into the profession through active involvement with the Kansas Society of Professional Engineers and the National Society of Professional Engineers. He invested in the people around him, mentoring engineers and leaders across the organization.
His legacy endures in the systems, standards, and partnerships shaping Kansas City today.
Welcoming Chad Thompson: Leading the Next Chapter

Chad brings over 30 years of engineering experience, with 25 of those years spent in service of Public Works Departments in the Kansas City area. His background provides a clear understanding of how infrastructure systems move from planning to implementation and into long-term use. That experience strengthens Lamp Rynearson’s role as a Kansas City civil engineering firm supporting communities at every stage of project delivery.
During his public-sector career, Chad led capital improvement efforts across the Kansas City metro, including roadway and bridge improvements, storm sewer systems, traffic and street lighting infrastructure, and water and sanitary sewer projects. He worked on large infrastructure projects, such as the KC Streetcar and KC Live Entertainment District, to small backyard drainage projects. His work supports both the daily function and long-term growth of the region.
Since joining Lamp Rynearson, Chad has expanded capabilities in federal intersection design, stormwater management, flood control, and municipal engineering services. He has strengthened relationships with local communities while helping position the firm to meet evolving infrastructure needs.
His continued involvement with KC APWA, ISI Envision, and MoDOT Local Public Authority certification reflects an ongoing commitment to the engineering profession and to the region.
