DC West Athletic Complex
The DC West Athletic Complex in Valley, Nebraska, represents a transformative project for the DC West Community Schools, designed to address the district’s need for expanded educational and athletic facilities. Prior to development, the site was agricultural land strategically selected to allow the high school campus to expand by relocating athletics away from the original, space-constrained campus. The new 45-acre complex, includes a new football field, track, baseball and softball fields, press boxes, a concession and restroom building, and a central spectator plaza.
From a civil engineering perspective, the project presented unique challenges and opportunities. The site’s location within a floodplain and its sandy soil conditions required innovative solutions to ensure long-term durability and safety. All occupiable spaces were elevated at least three feet above the floodplain to mitigate flood risk. Close coordination with the general contractor and geotechnical engineer was essential to design athletic fields that would perform reliably on the existing soils. Lamp Rynearson’s civil engineering team led the design of grading, drainage, and site infrastructure, ensuring that the complex not only met regulatory requirements but also provided a safe, accessible, and resilient environment for its users.
Landscape architecture played a central role in shaping the user experience and functionality of the DC West Athletic Complex. The landscape architecture team was responsible for the overall site layout, integrating the various athletic fields, plazas, and support facilities into a cohesive and welcoming environment. Emphasis was placed on circulation, accessibility, and the creation of gathering spaces that enhance the sense of community. Through thoughtful collaboration and technical expertise, Lamp Rynearson helped deliver a complex that will serve DC West students and the Valley community for generations to come.
