Joel Smith first heard about Lamp Rynearson when our President and CEO, Nancy Pridal, spoke to his engineering class at UNL. Nancy discussed finding purpose as an engineer, and how your role can create positive and equitable impacts in the community. Joel was impacted by this talk, finding what Nancy was saying to align with his ideas and beliefs. This motivated him to apply for an open position in Lamp Rynearson’s transportation group.
“Upon interviewing with Virgil, Matt, Scott, and Skylar in the transportation group, I quickly realized that this company, particularly the transportation group, is a great fit for me,” Joel said.
Joel joined Lamp Rynearson as an intern and has now transitioned into a full-time position. He has enjoyed the opportunity to make an immediate impact on the projects that he has been a are a part of.
“These opportunities make me feel valued and fulfilled,” Joel said.
His favorite project he has worked on during his first year is the Eppley Storm Sewer Maintenance project. This project included going into the field to record video footage of certain storm sewers at Eppley Airfield. After the footage was obtained, he put together a construction plan set to repair the notable damages. Joel enjoyed working and coordinating with coworkers, utility companies, and airport employees. “I felt trusted by Lamp Rynearson, even with minimal experience,” Joel said.
In the warmer summer months, Joel can be found camping and fishing as much as possible. He enjoys getting to relax outside and enjoy nature. Now that he lives in Omaha and works at Lamp Rynearson, he has a new appreciation for the recreational areas that he fishes and camps at.
“Many of the areas that I enjoy doing these activities at are ones that have been impacted by the work of Lamp Rynearson in some way, shape or form. It is cool to go out and enjoy these areas while knowing I work for the company who has helped bring them to life,” Joel said.
This last year has been exciting and productive. Joel has left an impact on several projects in the time he has been here. Looking forward, he has big hopes for his career. Joel’s goal is to obtain his PE license, and he looks forward to getting involved in professional and community programs.
“I also hope to make a lasting, positive impact on the communities we serve,” said Joel.
Joel has had an exciting first year and we are excited to see what he accomplishes in the future. Congratulations on one year at Lamp Rynearson, Joel!
