Offutt Air Force Base Building 500 Support Structures
Lamp Rynearson played a key role in the Offutt Air Force Base Building 500 project, a standout example of Federal Infrastructure Projects delivered through a Progressive Design-Build approach. This complex initiative focused on the assessment and demolition of three abandoned underground support structures—Buildings 501, 522, and 597—that historically supported the main Building 500 facility, home to critical Strategic Command operations.
As part of the Design-Build team, Lamp Rynearson provided 35% design development services in partnership with Kenneth Hahn Architecture and Alvine Engineering. The project scope included comprehensive site investigation services such as topographic surveying, utility potholing verification, ground-penetrating radar analysis, and geotechnical coordination. These efforts were essential for mapping the extensive underground infrastructure and ensuring the success of this federal infrastructure project.
Each structure presented unique engineering challenges. Building 597, located beneath a parking lot, was abandoned in place using flowable fill concrete, while Buildings 501 and 522, situated under roadways and green spaces, required full excavation and removal at depths up to 45 feet below grade. The Design-Build process demanded careful coordination to maintain the operational integrity of Building 500 and protect critical utility lines running through the site.
Lamp Rynearson’s multidisciplinary team delivered civil engineering design, survey services, utility coordination, and construction documentation through the 35% design phase, completed in July 2025. This project highlights Lamp Rynearson’s expertise in Federal Infrastructure Projects, underground utility coordination, and secure site operations. With comprehensive planning and design in place, Offutt Air Force Base is well-positioned to advance this essential infrastructure modernization as soon as funding for final design and construction is approved.
